The world of till roll printers includes 2 main types, thermal and non thermal. Thermal printers require heat reactive till roll paper that allows the printing process to work, there are many sizes and types of thermal till printer, we stock till rolls of just about every possible size, colour and ply for thermal printers. Our non-thermal till roll options are just as extensive to cover almost every non-thermal till printer in use in the U.K today.

BPA (bisphenol A) has been the active ingredient in thermal till rolls for decades. However research over the past decade has shown that it may be harmful to our health. In fact, to quote a scientific review on the issue in 2013 “A comprehensive literature search found 91 studies linking BPA to human health; 53 within the last year”. These concerns lead to an EU ban on the use of BPA in receipts from January 2nd, 2020 after which, they will no longer be on sale. This isn’t the end of the thermal till roll but it does mean change for thousands of retailers large and small around the U.K.

BPS

There is another chemical closely related to BPA in the phenol family, it’s called BPS (bisphenol S). BPS performs well as a replacement to BPA for thermal till rolls and is a cost effective substitute. The problem with BPS is that it has a similar toxicological profile to BPA and is already being monitored by agencies advising the E.U as a further chemical to ban from thermal till rolls. This means any health risks of BPA are likely unchanged as you move to BPS thermal till rolls and they are likely to end up banned too.

Phenol free

Rather than replace one harmful active ingredient with another, there are phenol free alternatives now available. Chemists at BASF have developed a product they call Pergafast. This enables the production of thermal till rolls that are non harmful, biodegradable and deliver excellent performance. These till rolls are in use today by leading retailers like John Lewis, Ikea, Waitrose, Tesco and many more.
